Why is there a mixed model of funding for NAR?
What is NAR institutional membership?
How can my organization become an institutional member?
Will I get institutional membership with my print subscription?
Will I get institutional membership as part of my consortium arrangement?
Will I get institutional membership as part of the Developing Countries Online Collection?
What is the NAR institutional membership rate?
What are the author charges for NAR Open Access?
Can we purchase our institutional memberships via our subscription agent?
How will authors at my institution receive their reduced rate author charges?
How can I activate my NAR institutional membership with Oxford Journals?
How can Oxford Journals help me to promote NAR membership to authors at my organization?
We have chosen this model in consultation with authors and librarians. The ability of authors to pay publication charges is highly dependent on sponsoring agencies and research institutions making the necessary changes to their funding processes so that authors have the funds at their disposal. For this reason we believe that there needs to be a gradual transition to an author-funded Open Access model. We hope that you will support Open Access by taking out / maintaining an institutional membership thus providing researchers based at your institution the opportunity to benefit from discounted author charges. By doing this we hope to establish an accessible charging scheme that will actively encourage funding agencies to make further resources available for publication. We expect the balance of publication funding to shift towards individual author charges in the future.
NAR institutional membership is available to organizations. Becoming an institutional member will give discounted publication charges to corresponding authors based at the member institution.
Institutional memberships can be purchased directly from Oxford Journals or your preferred subscription agent.
Institutional membership has to be purchased separately and will not be included with print subscriptions.
NAR is not included in our online collection so you will need to purchase an institutional membership separately.
No, but contributors from developing countries will benefit from reduced author charges.

Yes. Institutional memberships can be ordered and processed in the same way as your standard institutional subscriptions and are available via Oxford Journals or your preferred subscription agent. NAR content will also continue to be accessible through our third-party gateways, including SwetWise, EBSCOhost Electronic Journals, Ingenta etc.
Once a paper has been accepted, authors will receive an email sending them to a publication charge form. Your membership must be activated with Oxford Journals by the library contact at your organization in order to allow your authors access to the discounted publication charge form.
Your NAR institutional membership or print subscription will be allocated to an 8-or-12 digit subscriber number. Once you have the relevant subscription/membership it is the responsibility of the library administrator at the subscribing organization to register online at OUP.
Membership activation is managed in the same way as access to a standard Oxford Journals online subscription. If the subscriber number you are given for NAR already has other subscriptions on it that you are accessing online through Oxford Journals, then you do not need to register the number again.
Posters promoting your membership of NAR are available from the section promotional support for Librarians, or we can send you copies if you contact the Journals Marketing Team directly with the number of copies you require.
