OpenURL

This mechanism is no longer supported. To link to OxfordJournals data via OpenURL, please use CrossRef's OpenURL resolver.

This page describes OUP's mechanism for linking to Oxford Journals content using an OpenURL 0.1 syntax.

Table of Contents

1. Links to journal articles
2. Links to journal issues
3. Links to journal home pages
4. Journal lists

1. Links to journal articles

The link to a journal article is made up of four components:

Base Address + Object Description + Origin Description + Content Identifier

The OpenURL is constructed of key=value pairs each separated by an ampersand (&). The four components in the OpenURL are described below.

Base Address

The base address is http://www.oxfordjournals.org/content?

Object Description

The article must be specified with the following mandatory key value pairs in any order. Note that genre=article is a fixed value; the other values are dependent on the article being linked to.

genre=article
issn=[ISSN number]
volume=[volume number]
issue=[issue number]

THEN...
spage=[article start page]

OR...
aulast=[first author's last name]

OR...
atitle=[article title]

Origin Description

This describes where the link is originating from and takes the form

sid=[Vendor]:[Database]

Content Identifier

The content keyword should be 'abstract' or 'fulltext'

&pid=content:[content keyword]

Constructing the OpenURL

The order in which the Object Description, Origin Description, and Content Identifier appear is not significant.

Supplements are denoted by 'S' and the supplement number in the issue field.

We recommend that requests are made using article start pages as those with first author last name fields or article title fields can produce inconsistent results.

Note: The OpenURL examples below contain linebreaks to make them easy to read on screen. Actual OpenURLs cannot contain these.
