Oxford Journals launches DATABASE – a new open access journal

1 April 2009

Oxford Journals is today delighted to announce the launch of an innovative, open access journal, DATABASE: The Journal of Biological Databases and Curation. The new journal provides a platform for novel ideas in database research and the curation of biological information. It aims to strengthen the bridge between database developers, curators, and users.

The Editor-in-Chief, David Landsman, commented: “DATABASE offers the research community a new forum in an area that is rapidly developing and currently under-represented. A large volume of primary data is currently archived in numerous databases, and, as new generation technologies become more common in laboratories, large data sets will become even more pervasive than they are today. The archiving, curation, and analysis of all this data is a major challenge, and DATABASE will provide a forum to help further these endeavours.”

Claire Bird, Senior Publisher at Oxford Journals, added: “We are excited to be launching this new journal in what is clearly an area of increasing importance. DATABASE will also complement our other publications including Bioinformatics, Nucleic Acids Research, and Briefings in Bioinformatics. The journal will be fully open access and online-only, bringing opportunities for experimenting with new publishing models and online features for this community.”

The journal will publish detailed descriptions of databases, database tools and curation strategies in the broad arena of biology, as well as shorter papers describing significant updates to established databases. It will also feature reviews of complementary databases and database tools, as well as user tutorials and technical notes on database developments.

DATABASE is published under a fully open access model, with journal costs being covered by author publication charges, so all articles will be freely available to everybody online upon publication. The first DATABASE articles are available online from today. For further information about this title, please visit the journal homepage.
