Oxford Journals gains international standard for quality management
10 June 2009Oxford Journals, a division of Oxford University Press, has become one of the first STM publishers to achieve ISO 9001:2008 certification for the operations side of its business.
ISO 9001:2008 is the internationally recognized standard for quality management and relates to the processes that create and control the products and services an organization supplies. In order to gain the ISO 9001:2008 standard Oxford Journals had to demonstrate that it had a quality management programme that enables it to continually improve its service to customers. This audit was done by an external, UKAS accredited certification body, Certification International.
Pam Sutherland, Operations Director at Oxford Journals comments, 'Quality is extremely important to us at Oxford Journals, which is why we wanted to establish a more formal quality management programme. We hope our ISO 9001 certification will demonstrate to our authors, readers, and purchasers of our content that we have the proper mechanisms in place to provide a high quality of service to them.’
Through ISO 9001:2008 certification Oxford Journals proves that key working practices undertaken by staff working in its Operations Group (which includes the Production, IT, and Customer Services departments) are effective in providing a consistent quality of service.
The processes involved in taking journal manuscripts from acceptance, through copyediting and typesetting to publication online and in print, are included in the quality management programme, as are the services that provide support to Oxford Journals’ global customer base including librarians, consortia, societies, authors, and subscription agents. The inclusion of the Oxford Journals IT function in the quality management programme ensures that the software and systems used to manage online content provide a good quality of service to customers.
